Ford C-Max Hybrid

The Ford C-Max Hybrid is a five-passenger, front-wheel-drive hatchback wagon that was sold in the U.S. from the 2013 to 2018 model years. It is known for its spacious interior and decent performance.

Engine and performance

The C-Max Hybrid and C-Max Energi (plug-in hybrid) share a powertrain that includes:

  • A 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine.
  • An electric motor.
  • An electronically controlled continuously variable automatic transmission (eCVT).
  • A lithium-ion battery.

Together, these components produce a combined 188 horsepower. Test drives conducted by Car and Driver in 2017 found that the C-Max Hybrid delivered solid acceleration, with a zero-to-60 mph time of 7.9 seconds.

Fuel economy

Fuel economy for the C-Max was the subject of significant controversy and multiple revisions during its production run.

C-Max Hybrid

  • Original EPA rating (2013): Ford initially advertised an EPA rating of 47 mpg combined.
  • Revised EPA rating (2014): Following complaints and lawsuits, Ford lowered the official rating for the 2014 model year to 40 mpg combined (42 city/38 highway).
  • Real-world: A Car and Driver test of a 2017 model recorded 35 mpg in observed driving and 33 mpg on the highway fuel economy test loop.

C-Max Energi (plug-in hybrid)

  • Plug-in capability: Offered an all-electric range of about 20 miles.
  • EPA ratings: The plug-in version's ratings were also downgraded, with the hybrid-gasoline mode receiving a revised rating of 38 mpg.

Notable features

Throughout its various model years, the C-Max Hybrid offered a variety of standard and optional features, including:

  • Connectivity: Ford's SYNC infotainment system, with later models (2016+) supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • Interior comfort: High seating position with ample headroom, leather-trimmed seats, and dual-zone climate control on higher trim levels.
  • Versatility: With the rear seats folded flat, the vehicle provided up to 52.6 cubic feet of cargo volume.
  • Advanced driver-assist features: Some later models included optional blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
